A doctor's qualification is collateral enough.
Lenders treat a medical degree as a credit asset. Doctor loans are priced and sized on qualification, registration and practice vintage — commonly with no security at all, and with paperwork far lighter than any comparable business loan.
Why doctors borrow on better terms than other professionals
Medical practice income is unusually stable and unusually recession-resistant, and the qualification cannot be lost to a business downturn. Lenders have decades of portfolio data showing that default rates on doctor lending run well below general unsecured business lending, and they price accordingly.
Quantum is driven by qualification tier and vintage rather than by turnover alone. A super-specialist with a DM or MCh and ten years of practice will be offered several times what a fresh graduate can access, even on similar declared income. Post-graduate specialists sit comfortably between the two.
The distinction that matters most in practice is between a professional loan and a business loan. If you are borrowing for personal or practice-establishment purposes, the professional-loan route is faster and lighter. If you are building a nursing home or buying a CT scanner, a secured facility against the property or the equipment will be materially cheaper — see hospital construction and medical equipment finance.
Rates below the mid-teens depend on a clean credit record. A CIBIL score above 750 and no recent overdue on cards or existing loans typically moves a doctor loan into the 10.5–12.5% band; a score in the high 600s pushes it towards 15–16% or into secured territory.
Indicative pricing in 2026
Unsecured professional loans price on qualification and credit score. Add collateral and the rate drops sharply.

What doctors get wrong when they borrow
Taking unsecured money for a secured purpose
A ₹2 Cr unsecured professional loan at 13% over seven years costs roughly ₹70 Lakh more in interest than the same amount secured against property at 10% over twelve years. Convenience is expensive. If the purpose is a building or a scanner, take the secured route and use the unsecured line for genuine short-term needs.
Consultancy income that never reaches the bank
Visiting-consultant fees and hospital retainers are frequently received partly in cash or not fully declared. Lenders assess only banked, ITR-declared income. Two clean years of declaring the full figure typically expands eligible quantum more than any negotiation ever will.
Multiple simultaneous applications
Applying to six lenders at once generates six hard enquiries in a fortnight, which most credit models read as distress. Scores fall and offers tighten. One well-placed file, or a soft-quote comparison run before formal application, protects the score.

Incomplete files cause most multi-week delays. We assemble the full set upfront, in the order credit teams read it.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions our advisory desk is asked most often about Doctor Loan.
Broadly ₹10 Lakh to ₹5 Crore, driven by qualification and vintage. Super-specialists with DM or MCh qualifications and established practices reach the upper end; recent graduates start much lower.
A clean credit score above 750 and fully banked, ITR-declared professional income are what move you up the range, more than turnover alone.
Yes, and salaried consultants are often the easiest profile to underwrite. Form 16, salary slips and salary credits in your bank account give the lender exactly the visibility it wants.
Where you also have private practice income, declaring it in the ITR meaningfully increases your eligible quantum, though it takes two assessment years for the record to build.
Yes, but at a smaller quantum and a higher rate. Most lenders want at least one to three years post-registration for a meaningful unsecured facility.
For a fresh graduate, a smaller professional loan combined with a equipment loan against the equipment itself, or a CGTMSE-backed facility under our government schemes desk, usually gets further than a large unsecured request.
No. Unsecured doctor loans typically run 10.5–16% against 8.5–12% for a loan against property, and the tenure is shorter, so total interest is considerably higher.
What a doctor loan buys you is speed and the absence of collateral. Use it where those are genuinely what you need, not as a default.
Yes, though the terms differ. BAMS, BHMS and BUMS practitioners with valid council registration are eligible with most lenders, generally at lower quantum and higher pricing than allopathic specialists.
Practice vintage carries more weight here, and a clinical establishment registration plus consistent banked receipts do a great deal to improve the offer.
