What it actually is

How the scheme is structured

PM Vishwakarma is dedicated to 18 traditional trades, including carpentry, blacksmithing, pottery, weaving, cobbling, tailoring, boat-making, goldsmithing and stone carving. The scheme provides recognition through registration and a PM Vishwakarma certificate, basic and advanced skill training with a stipend, a toolkit incentive of ₹15,000, and access to concessional collateral-free credit at 5% per annum — the cheapest government business credit currently available in India.

Credit is released in two tranches rather than as a single loan: the first tranche of ₹1 Lakh with an 18-month repayment period, and the second tranche of ₹2 Lakh with a 30-month repayment period, available only after successful repayment of the first. This staged structure builds a credit history for artisans who may never have borrowed formally before.

The interest differential between 5% and the market rate is absorbed by the government, so the borrower pays only the concessional rate. Digital transaction incentives are also available, encouraging artisans to move towards digital payments in their trade.

What applicants get wrong

What to know before applying

01

The second tranche depends on the first being repaid

Artisans sometimes assume they can apply for the full ₹3 Lakh upfront. The second, larger tranche is only released after the first ₹1 Lakh is successfully repaid, which is by design — it builds a formal repayment record.

02

Skill training is not optional in most implementations

Basic (and optionally advanced) skill training with a stipend is part of the scheme design and typically precedes or accompanies the credit component. Factor the training period into your planning rather than expecting the loan alone.

03

Registration must happen on the official portal

Registration and certification run through the PM Vishwakarma portal with Aadhaar-based verification. Third parties charging a fee for "registration assistance" beyond genuine documentation help should be treated with caution — the portal registration itself is free.
